Srinagar airport to go international soon

Srinagar airport to go international soon

‘lacks infrastructure for international standards’

Jehangir Rashid

Srinagar, Nov 8: Srinagar airport is all set make an appearance on the route-maps of international air-traffic in the coming months as its status would soon be prefixed with international, sources said. However the necessary land infrastructure which ought to match international airport standards is completely missing. “The road from airport to city cannot be termed as being international standard as there are more than one reason for the same. First the road width is not enough to accommodate more than two vehicles on the same lane of the road and secondly the already decrepit road is full of potholes that can easily be felt throughout the road,” said Rauf A Punjabi, former President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI).

Punjabi at the same time believes that the transport to and fro airport should be of international standard so that people coming to this place feel the difference. He suggests that coaches of international standard should be introduced so that Srinagar city too can boast of international standards when it comes to aviation industry.

The road from Srinagar airport to city centre is just a two-lane road which often remains clogged at important junctions of Rambagh and Haftchinar with hundreds of vehicles stranded for too long. One fails to understand the complete silence being observed by the concerned authorities at helm in this regard. Despite repeated promises no substantive action has been taken to improve the traffic scene along the road that leads to the to-be- international airport.

“The adjacent areas of the airport should have been given precedence for the image makeover long before recognizing the Srinagar airport as international. But the roads approaching towards the airport do not even bear the reflection of roadways of Indian metropolitan let alone the international standards”, says Rashid Ashraf, a computer professional from Hyderpora.

Lot more needs to be done so that the city really deserves to have an international airport. In the other cities the roads that lead from airport to main city are six lanes, eight lanes or at least four lanes, but here the case is totally different, he adds.

Since flyovers and express highways constitute an important aspect of modern transport system, the same has to be introduced here as well. But as usual the government has been late in this regard and the work on the flyover at Hyderpora has started just a few months back.

“Common sense demanded that the work on flyover should have been started years back. It would have lead to two results and benefitted the people in the longer run. First it would have eased the traffic rush on this important route and at the same time it would have given an impression to the people coming from outside world that Srinagar city does not lack the modern road ways for efficient traffic regulation,” said Abdul Hamid, a leading businessman.

Moreover, there remains a glaring discrepancy which may crop up once the Srinagar airport gets the recognition of an international airport. The runway belongs to the army and the buildings belong to the Airports Authority of India which creates confusion about the said airport.

“In the past it has been seen that the flights reaching Srinagar are not allowed to land once the clock strikes five in the evening. Once the airport is upgraded to be an international airport there shouldn’t be any binding on arrival or departure of the flights. Hopefully the things are properly organised before Srinagar airport starts functioning as an international airport,” said Mohammad Ramzan, a shawl businessman.
