Star product: Canon imagePress V1000

A do-it-all ‘Swiss Army knife’ toner press with Canon’s next-generation technology.

What does it do?

This latest addition to Canon’s imagePress line of toner production presses slots into the mid-range between its entry-level C910 series and top-end C10010VP and majors on versatility. At the launch event Canon dubbed it a “Swiss Army knife for print”. Because of its new productivity and automation technologies, Canon regards it as a next-generation imagePress.

When was it launched and what markets is it aimed at?

The launch was in April and the target markets include a range of PSPs including commercial printers, in-house printers and public organisations. Carlotta Basile, product marketing manager, Canon UK & Ireland, says the V1000 is built for productivity without compromising quality, so users can turn jobs around quickly.

How does it work?

It’s a very compact four-colour SRA3-format double-sided digital toner press with an official speed of 100 A4ppm and a target throughput of 75,000 to 600,000 pages a month. It is Energy Star certified and has received the EPEAT Gold rating for “green electronics”.

It can copy, scan, impose and store colour documents up to A3, with a first copy time of 20 seconds – the scanner auto feed takes weights from 38-220gsm. Speeds are consistent for paper weights between 54 to 400gsm. Envelopes can be fed as well as auto-duplexing banner sheets up to 1,300mm long.

Canon stresses that the V1000 is not merely a faster C910 or slower C10010VP. “The fixing unit, for example, is a new feature of the device and is a result of many years of developments and innovation,” says Basile. “The cooling unit is built directly into this machine, whereas it is currently an add-on option for the imagePress C910 and C10010. The V1000 also differs in terms of paper capabilities to reflect changing and evolving customer needs and features extensive media-handling capabilities.”

The V1000 has newly integrated POD-Surf fixing technology, which controls the temperature of the fixing belt for a consistent print speed. This allows the device to support a broad range of media weights and types, from synthetic to magnetic media, Canon says.

New sheet transfer technology creates an optimal transport path for each sheet, as the positions of the secondary transfer roller and back-up sheet are varied depending on the weight of the media. There’s a paper deck double-feeding detector kit and operator attention light.

A new two-stage registration correction system includes front-to-back registration. The new integral cooling system helps minimise waste through warping, sticking during weight changes on the fly, or bricking if a job is left standing. A built-in spectrophotometer handles single-button calibration internally.

Finishing options include: collating; grouping; offsetting; stapling; saddle stitching; hole punching (multiple patterns); document insertion; folding (C, Z, half, double parallel, accordion-Z); and trimming.

Canon says that productivity isn’t purely down to speed, but production efficiencies throughout. The Canon Prisma or EFI controllers manage incoming jobs to support pre-production, while feeding and finishing equipment do their bits too.

What’s the USP?

Basile says that the main USP is the combination of technology for reliable productivity and media handling and well as the general versatility and small footprint. “While the imagePress V1000 is the smallest device in the range, it delivers unrivalled quality,” says Basile. “USPs include POD-Surf technology, which provides rated speed on all media weights and the ability to print up to a 1.3m auto duplex banner, allowing for more creative jobs.”

How easy is it to use?

“It features some great applications that can deliver prints in minutes,” says Basile. “This is due to the printer’s inline sensor, which automatically completes DFE calibration, profile creation, and colour verification, making it easier to preadjust colour tone, so printers can take on a wider variety of jobs.”

What training and support is offered?

“We work collaboratively with our customers to ensure that users are fully trained and that our service team is available not only for installation, but for ongoing support throughout the life of the press,” says Basile.

What does it cost?

It’s dependent on the modular specification, but prices start at around £65,000. There’s a range of contract options depending on customer requirements.

Are there any installations?

Not yet, says Basile, but coming soon. “We’ve had a great response to the launch and across EMEA, we already have a number of orders and prospective installations.”
