THE BLURB: Montezumas is the brainchild and labour of love from husband and wife team Helen and Simon Pattinson. Their mission is to create chocolate of the highest quality with a big dollop of ethical production for good measure. They favour trading fairly over Fairtrade (apparently there is a difference - see Montezuma's Trading Fairly) and generally try to be "good eggs" when it comes to the environment.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Perfectly proportioned deep red box wrapped with a nice thick ribbon screams Valentine's day. The white truffles are nestled inside layers of black packaging - visually, it's rather sumptious.
THE TASTE TEST:
Savour the truffles slowly - there's a lot going on. The flakey 'fizzy' outer coating contrasts nicely with the smooth cream-egg like goo in the middle. Consistency is melt in the mouth lovely with a hint of champagne after-taste. Indulgent and rich - not for the faint-hearted.
PROS: Indulge yourself with a clear conscience. Cocoa is sourced from plantations in Peru and the Domincan Republic which are monitored for their fair treatment of workers.
CONS: Not sure there was much 'fizziness' going on.
VALUE FOR MONEY: This is a quality product that delivers on the taste front and looks luxurious, definitely worth the £10.95 price tag. Especially for the one you love...
