Fedrigoni has promised its new Materia Viva Metamorphosis range of paper products can mimic many of the qualities that make plastic the norm for packaging.

aid the mono-material Metamorphosis range, which is made entirely from paper - and is therefore recyclable, “aims to replace plastic while guaranteeing its properties”.

These properties include papers with mould-resistance, water-resistance, grease and stain-proofing, heat-sealability, and stretchability.

Micaela Di Trana, marketing and R&D VP of Fedrigoni Paper, said the papers were the product of a 20-year chain of research into more ecologically friendly products.

She said: “The innovation introduced by Metamorphosis, inspired by the principles of the circular economy, is a concrete example of Fedrigoni Group’s ‘Making Progress’ approach to sustainability issues, which in the context of the development of new products pushes for increasingly cutting-edge solutions, capable of combining performance, aesthetics and care for the environment.”

She added that Fedrigoni aimed to support customers who were looking at sustainability as much as it could.

“Replacing plastic with paper is possible in many applications, and it is also aesthetically pleasing.”

Fedrigoni’s new thermoformed cellulose pulp brand Éclose, which the firm bought a 70% stake in in September 2021, will similarly aim to replace thermoformed plastic packaging.

The Metamorphosis range represents the latest instalment in Fedrigoni’s ecologically friendly Materia Viva line, succeeding the Materia Viva Roots collection, which featured papers with high natural fibre contents and 20-100% recycled material content.
