Scottish printer Thomson Litho has said it "has not been immune to the current downturn in print manufacturing" amid reports it is poised to shut the East Kilbride business with the loss of more than 90 jobs.
The company, which was acquired by Czech multimedia business GZ Digital Media in March last year, said it had taken the decision to "review its current business structure" that included options to support its customer base at East Kilbride and "realise new growth opportunities across the marketplace".
It said: "Despite aiming to limit any job losses, the ongoing process will be vital in determining the longer-term sustainability of M&A Thomson Litho in East Kilbride and the viability of positioning the business as a support function to its parent company GZ Digital Media, which fulfils a broad portfolio of contracts across the UK and mainland Europe.
However, workers at the factory have been told of the closure plans and are expected to receive written confirmation of a 30-day consultation period this week, according to The Herald.
"There are 93 jobs here – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters – and we’ve just been told that 74 jobs are definitely going, but maybe all of them," an employee told the paper.
According to staff, the company has been gradually moving machinery out of the site with the firm's two major contracts, Canon and Sony, already moved to GZ's Czech operation.
"Throughout this period, the business will continue to fulfil all of its existing contractual commitments and explore new business opportunities with its parent GZ Digital Media," the company added.
Earlier this year, the company shed 55 jobs. Speaking at the time, chief executive Gavin Letham said it was "with regret" that the company had to downsize.
"Current market conditions are difficult and as such we need to take measures in order that we can secure the viability and future of the site," he added.
